What Causes Double Vision After Cataract Surgery
In cataract surgery, a natural lens that has become cloudy is cleared out, and an artificial intraocular lens is placed in its place. The procedure is usually safe and effective, but a chance of facing double vision or diplopia may occur.
This can be uncomfortable, cause specific motor functions to be impaired, limit daily activities, and lessen quality of life. In some instances, the duality of vision clears up on its own, while in others, it may need other medical procedures on the patient. Knowing what is causing the problem and what the problem is is half the battle as to how to proceed.
Causes Double Vision After Cataract Surgery
Here’s a breakdown of the most common causes of double vision after cataract surgery and what they mean for you:
Incorrect Lens Placement:
One of the main reasons for double vision is the incorrect positioning of the intraocular lens. This lens is slightly tilted or not placed properly in the eye. In that case, the light incident on the eye may be reflected incorrectly, resulting in some types of vision abnormalities, such as diplopia.
Solution: Clinically mild displacement can cause no specific symptoms and heal independently, while significant displacement may necessitate surgical intervention.
Swelling of the Cornea (Corneal Edema):
The consequences of this type of operation: after cataract surgery, singly or in combination, cause optically significant corneal swelling or edema that leads to blurry or double vision. This edema may develop due to injury during surgery; thus, where surgery is massive or protracted, edema may be more severe.
Solution: Infarctions, in general, are a self-limiting condition that resolves with time at a rate of. They may prescribe eye drops or ointment; usually, it is anti-inflammatory, bringing the inflammation down and all the symptoms that go with it.
Misalignment of the Eyes (Strabismus):
Description: Thus, strabismus, which means eye misalignment, might be present in patients who have had cataract surgery before. When the eyes are not ophthalmologically straight, they send two different images to the brain, known as ‘double vision.’
Solution: Other therapies include wearing special glasses mounted with prismatic lenses, eye movement exercises, and, in more severe cases, surgeries called squint surgery.

Dry Eye Syndrome:
Description: The usual risk seen in cataract surgery is dry eye, and it may, at some time, make the patient see two objects in place of one object. The procedure may conflict with the tear film and thus produce discomfort such as burning, itching, fogging or halos, or doubling of vision.
Solution: Lubrication by eye drops or artificial tears helps restore moisture and vision.
Refer to the condition to involve the posterior capsule, which, when opaque, is abbreviated as PCO.
Description: This is often the case when the membrane on which the new lens is based becomes clouded. This can cause foggy vision and sometimes develop into a double vision of the eyes. This situation also goes by the name of a secondary cataract.
Solution: PCO is easily treated with a quick, non-invasive laser procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy, which clears the clouded membrane.
